Thursday, April 7th, 2016 New French Immersion Gr. 6 Homework

To be completed by Friday, April 22nd.
You can start tonight, this weekend or on Monday. You should do a minimum of 30 minutes of homework 4 times each week. I suggest you do 30 minutes on Mon-Tues-Wed and Thurs of next week and the same for the week after. This will add up to 4 hours of French! On option 6, where it says to choose a French activity, don't forget about all the options that are shared with you in your Hapara Folder in the title: ''Fun and Creative French Activities!''
We went to the library today (Arpril 7th) and will be going every two weeks on Thursdays at 1:00pm. Using the French book you signed out from our library, and for homework next week and the week after (you can start tonight and this weekend if you wish), you will have to do the first two activities and then choose one of the others. You will need to record your work on the document shared with you in the Hapara folder called: ''Tracking my homework''. Bonne chance!
#1 (must do): Out loud, read your book for 15 minutes on eight different evenings (or days if on the weekend). If you have a shorter book, you might have to read your book over again!
#2 (must do): In your 'tracking your homework' document, write 20 challenging words you found in your book. If you can't find 20 challenging words, your book is too easy for you! What I want you to do with your challenging words:
First, write the sentence in which you found the word and underline the challenging word: 2nd: write the FRENCH definition of the word. 3rd: write what kind of word it is:  EXAMPLE: 1st: ''Un des gnomes en train de rôder s'aperçoit qu'elles sont là!'' 2nd Rôder: traîner sans buts ou errer avec de mauvaises intentions. 3rd: VERBE
Choose only one or more if you wish of the following activities:
#3: Use a voice recorder to record yourself reading your book. Save your recording in the French folder in Hapara.
#4: In your 'Tracking your Homework'' document, write a French 1 page summary of your book. Use the English strategies learned: R.O.P.E.S or A.P.E.S. or Hamburger strategy.
#5: Create a short story of your own, in any apps you want or simply writing it down. If you read a non-fiction book, come up with 5 French questions that interest you and find the answers!
#6: Come up with your own French activity (doesn't have to be related to the book you are reading). Keep track of your work!

Any questions, comments? Please ask/tell!! :-)  M.K.

French Immersion Resources for Parents/Students

French Immersion Resources for Parents/Students

I’ve had parents asking about resources to help their child practice French at home. Here are a few ideas and links:
During the summer: like anything, DAILY practice, even if only for 10-15 minutes goes a LONG way in helping your child prepare, feel ready, develop confidence and have success in gr.7.
CEFR (Common European Framework): most current approach for our students learning French in Ontario. Here’s a link with details:
A couple of good resources for your child to work in and prepare for gr.7:  http://www.mygiftedchild.com/French-Immersion-En-route-vers-le-succs-6.html
And,
There are many resources out there, searching the web is helpful. Students do need to speak the language to feel comfortable. To this end, they need others to converse with or, texts they can read along with. There are many French books available on line at our city of Ottawa Library website. Using your library card will give you access to tons of resources! Students reading along out loud with a voice-recorded book will help a lot! Visit: https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/fr
Very informative document from the ministry: https://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/literacynumeracy/parentGuideFrench.pdf

Good luck! J  M.K.
